What Is Bufo (5 MeO DMT) and Why Are So Many People Drawn to It?

If you have spent any time in the healing, spiritual or psychedelic medicine world, chances are you have heard people talking about Bufo or 5 MeO DMT.
Maybe someone you know had an experience they struggled to put into words.
Maybe you have heard it described as one of the most profound psychedelic experiences a person can have.
Or maybe you don’t know very much about it at all, but something about it has caught your attention.
I have learned over the years that people come to medicine for many different reasons.
Sometimes we are searching for healing.
Sometimes we are standing at a crossroads in our lives.
Sometimes we have done years of therapy, meditation, personal development and spiritual work, and yet we can still feel that there is another layer asking to be explored.
And sometimes there is simply a calling we cannot logically explain.
Bufo, or 5 MeO DMT, is one of the most powerful medicines I have had the privilege of working with, both personally and in ceremony with others. It is also one that I believe deserves tremendous respect.
So let’s talk about what it actually is, what the experience can be like and why so many people feel drawn to it.
What Is Bufo or 5 MeO DMT?
5 MeO DMT, short for 5 methoxy N,N dimethyltryptamine, is a powerful psychedelic compound.
The term Bufo has commonly been used to describe 5 MeO DMT sourced from the secretion of the Sonoran Desert toad, also known as the Colorado River toad.
You may hear people use the words Bufo and 5 MeO DMT interchangeably, although technically they are not exactly the same thing. 5 MeO DMT is the psychoactive compound, while Bufo traditionally refers to the toad secretion containing it.
In ceremony, the medicine is typically vaporized and inhaled.
Unlike a psilocybin journey that may unfold gradually over several hours, a 5 MeO DMT experience can begin within moments.
And those moments can be profound.
Our ordinary sense of self can begin to fall away.
The stories.
The roles.
The identities.
The constant thinking.
The things we believe we need to fix, control, understand or become.
For some people, what remains is an extraordinary sense of stillness, connection, love or oneness.
Some describe it as returning home.
Some describe an experience of God, Spirit or Source.
Some experience what feels like death and rebirth.
Others simply say there are no words big enough to describe where they went.
And I think that is important.
Not everything we experience in medicine needs to be intellectually understood.
Sometimes we are being invited to experience something beyond the mind.
Why Are So Many People Drawn to 5 MeO DMT?
I think many of us spend an enormous amount of our lives trying to become someone.
Trying to heal ourselves.
Trying to understand ourselves.
Trying to become more successful, more spiritual, more lovable, more worthy, more whole.
We carry our histories with us.
Our trauma.
Our responsibilities.
Our relationships.
Our regrets.
Our fears.
Our ideas about who we are supposed to be.
And underneath all of that, there can be a longing to simply be.
This is one of the things that can make a 5 MeO DMT experience so profound.
For some people, there is a temporary experience of everything they have been carrying simply falling away.
Not because they figured it all out.
Not because they finally healed every wound.
But because, for a moment, there may be nothing left to hold onto.
And what they encounter underneath all of that can be incredibly beautiful.
A remembrance.
A connection.
A sense that perhaps we are so much more than the stories we have spent our lives believing about ourselves.
Is 5 MeO DMT the Same as Psilocybin?
Not at all.
Both can offer profound experiences, but they are very different medicines.
A psilocybin ceremony generally unfolds over several hours. There can be imagery, memories, emotions, insights, laughter, grief, resistance and periods of deep reflection.
There is often a journey to follow.
5 MeO DMT can be very different.
The experience is generally much shorter and can move incredibly quickly.
Rather than taking you through the story of your life, it may temporarily take you beyond the story altogether.
This doesn’t make one medicine better than another.
It simply means that different medicines may call to us at different times and for different reasons.
Part of my work with people before ceremony is helping them explore what they are actually seeking and whether the medicine they are considering feels appropriate for where they are.
Sometimes Bufo is the answer.
Sometimes psilocybin is.
And sometimes medicine isn’t the next step at all.
Discernment is part of the work.
Bufo Is Powerful, but It Isn’t a Quick Fix
A profound experience does not automatically create a transformed life.
Medicine can show us something.
It can open a door.
It can allow us to experience ourselves and consciousness in ways we may never have imagined possible.
But eventually, we come home.
Back to our relationships.
Back to our bodies.
Back to our families.
Back to our work.
Back to the places where we are still triggered, afraid, grieving, growing and learning.
That is where integration begins.
The real question becomes:
What will you do with what you were shown?
How will you live differently?
What are you ready to release?
What are you ready to embody?
What deserves your attention now?
The ceremony itself may be brief.
The integration can continue unfolding for months or even years.
Is Bufo or 5 MeO DMT for Everyone?
No.
And I think anyone serving this medicine needs to be willing to say that.
There are physical health conditions, medications and psychological circumstances that can make 5 MeO DMT inappropriate or potentially unsafe for someone.
There are also moments in our lives when an intense medicine experience simply may not be what our system needs.
This is why I don’t believe in approaching ceremony casually.
Before I work with someone, there is a screening and preparation process.
We talk.
We look at what is happening in your life.
We explore why you feel called.
We discuss medications, health considerations and your previous experience with medicine.
And sometimes I will recommend waiting or exploring another form of support first.
The goal isn’t to get everyone into ceremony.
The goal is to honour the person, the medicine and the timing.
What Does a Bufo Ceremony With Me Look Like?
My approach to medicine has changed and deepened enormously through the years.
I don’t believe my job is to heal you.
And I don’t believe the medicine is here to magically fix you.
My role is to walk beside you and create a container where you can explore whatever is asking to be met.
For me, ceremony begins before the medicine.
It begins with conversation.
With preparation.
With intention.
With understanding what you are stepping into and creating as much safety as we can before asking the body to surrender.
The ceremony itself is held with deep presence, prayer, reverence and respect for both the medicine and the person receiving it.
And then we integrate.
Because I am interested in more than giving someone an extraordinary experience.
I care about what happens when you go home.
I care about how the experience lands in your body.
How it changes the way you see yourself.
How you bring what you encountered into your relationships, your choices and your everyday life.
That is where medicine becomes practice.
Maybe You Feel the Call
I don’t believe everyone needs Bufo.
I don’t believe everyone needs psychedelics.
And I certainly don’t believe we need to continually chase bigger and more powerful experiences in order to heal.
But I have witnessed some incredibly beautiful moments through this medicine.
I have watched people remember something about themselves that they had forgotten.
I have watched people soften.
Surrender.
Grieve.
Reconnect.
And experience moments that became deeply meaningful parts of their healing and spiritual journeys.
If you have been feeling curious about Bufo or 5 MeO DMT, you don’t need to know yet whether you are ready.
Curiosity can simply be the beginning of a conversation.
You are welcome to reach out, ask questions and explore whether this medicine feels aligned for where you are right now.
I currently offer private Bufo and 5 MeO DMT ceremonies through Gaia Wellness, as well as opportunities to experience this medicine as part of select healing retreats.

What Ceremony Looks Like With Me When I hold Bufo ceremony, it is never rushed and never casual. We begin with thorough preparation, creating safety in the body and clarity of intention before the medicine is ever introduced. The ceremony itself is held in a sacred and supportive container, with your nervous system, your emotional body and your spiritual wellbeing all held with care. And what follows in the days and weeks after is supported with integration guidance to help you make sense of and ground what you experienced. The Bufo Ceremony is available as a standalone experience and is also included as part of the Full Returning Home Journey at our November retreat in Cantley, Quebec. If you feel called and would like to explore whether this medicine and this container might be right for you, I would love to connect.
